Pastitsio as a Greek casserole

Another day of adventure in Greece began with a conversation with a friend from a nearby school in Katerini - "Platon School". We faced the task recommended to us by the teachers, supervisors of our project, thanks to which we have a chance to create our culinary blog. Our peer, asked by us about his favorite Greek dish, recommended us pastitsio without hesitation. It is a Greek casserole, the name of which comes from the Italian cuisine, where it literally means "mess". It is also a spicy casserole consisting of pasta, fish and meat. Pastitsio is one of the many dishes that must be served at weddings and other important celebrations in Cyprus. In this version, the dish is most often prepared from pork.

Components:

• 400 g of pasticio or penne

• 500 g of ground beef

• 3 tablespoons of olive oil

• 50 ml of dry red wine

• 2 cans of peeled tomatoes

• 3 cloves of garlic

• Onions

• a bit of ground nutmeg

Bechamel sauce

• 30 g of butter

• 30 g of flour

• 500 ml of milk

• 100 g of yellow cheese

•spices: salt, pepper, sweet pepper, chilli, oregano, basil

A method of preparing

Pour olive oil into a hot frying pan and fry the minced meat with chopped onion on it, pour the wine over it, add canned tomatoes, spices and finely chopped garlic.

Simmer the sauce for 10 minutes, and in the meantime, cook the pasta al dente.

Prepare the Béchamel sauce:

in a pot, melt the butter, add milk, flour and spices, then mix thoroughly with a whisk. Season with nutmeg and salt to taste, stir until the lumps are gone and the sauce is thick.

Place the cooked al dente pasta in thin layers in an ovenproof dish, pour over each layer with meat sauce and béchamel sauce. On top of the casserole, grate the cheese and bake in the oven for 30 minutes at 170 degrees without air circulation.
